What caused Charlie Kirk's assassination?
(a) Social Media (b) Cancel Culture (c) The Left (d) All of the Above
“Say anything, scream nothing.”
That needs to be the rule for speech on college campuses. As we cope with the unrelenting tragedy of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, it’s important that we find the cause. And yes, I too am tempted to blame Leftist media bias, which debases itself again and again and again — from the word choices (shot, killed, attacked, murdered … fall short. Kirk was assassinated. That’s the word, guys) to the “Gee, who can really know the motive” to the frame shifting to how Republicans are reacting. It’s maddening, and frankly, unforgivable. I see too much evidence that journalism has been replaced by click-bait business models.
A Martyr for Civil Society
Mark my words, Charlie Kirk will be remembered and raised up as a martyr on the level of Martin Luther King. What strikes me is not that Kirk is somehow opposite of King - right martyr balancing the left martyr - rather their similarities. They were both deeply Christian men, and their Christian light was intolerable to a pathological minority on the fringe of society. Both not only believed but practiced nonviolent civil engagement. This is what we must cherish, and will cherish.
Kirk was a martyr for free speech, and his assassination was enabled by the bastardized idea of “hate speech” in which “words are violence” and can therefore be met with resistance. I do blame the American university for this, because universities allowed intolerance to fester for decades, for protest without limits, for screaming students to go unpunished and uncorrected. There is the root cause.
